Sandy is a social entrepreneur, inspirational speaker, experienced manager, leadership skills instructor, and management consultant. Her passion is helping the younger generation unleash their leadership potential to benefit the community.
She is also the co-founder and president of Colnnovate Consulting, a consulting firm that provides leadership skills training, potential building, and strategic planning courses for companies, foundations, and non-profit organizations.
From 2011 to 2018, Sandy was appointed by the president to the board of directors and served as the executive director of the Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF). VEF is an independent organization under the U.S. government tasked with promoting bilateral relations between the United States and Vietnam. During this time, Sandy initiated leadership skills training courses, including Public Speaking and Adaptive Leadership courses, for hundreds of VEF members who were engineers and homemakers. science.
Sandy was born in Hanoi and left Vietnam at the age of 10. After living in refugee camps in rural China and Hong Kong, Sandy immigrated to the United States at the age of 13. In the section My StoryEach student will present their own story as a compelling example with three parts – The difficulties encountered, the choices made in confronting those difficulties, and the achievements attained afterward.In addition, students will learn how to tell a story in just two minutes or less. Of course, the first obstacle will be having to shorten each person's story to just two minutes, but this will prevent the story from being rambling and keep it focused. The two-minute time limit forces us to omit lengthy, unnecessary details. Get straight to the core issues that motivate you, describe your real experiences and your true self. Sandy Sandy always told herself she was a lucky person. She was born in Hanoi and lived in the heart of the Vietnam War until she was 10 years old. Not long after, her family separated and moved to a plantation in rural China and lived in hiding in refugee camps in Hong Kong. When Sandy was 13, her family set foot in the United States. Sandy still vividly remembers her first day of high school there. She stood outside the cafeteria, peeking through the glass to watch her classmates eat lunch and laugh. She burst into tears because she didn't know English to ask for a lunch voucher. During her first week of school in America, she just sat with her head down and cried. Almost no one paid attention to her.
At that moment, she suddenly remembered how much effort and danger her parents had overcome to get here. She told herself and resolved that she had to learn English. After 5 years, with the support of her teachers and friends, Sandy won a full scholarship to study at Duke University, one of the top 10 universities in the United States.
Thanks to her experiences, Sandy understands and appreciates the value of education as the key to unlocking opportunities that help herself and others have better lives. In 1998, she founded a non-governmental organization to help thousands of Vietnamese refugees in the United States. In 2010, after graduating from Harvard Kennedy School, she was appointed by President Obama as a member of the Board of Directors of the Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF). During her tenure, Sandy initiated a training program in public speaking and adaptive leadership skills with the goal of transforming the talents of the VEF Foundation into future leaders capable of creating significant change in society, particularly in the fields of science, technology, and health. Following the success of her leadership training program, in 2019, Sandy officially launched her Public Speaking courses for leaders around the world. She enjoys teaching and short-term training programs because she has had many successes with this method throughout her leadership career. Understanding that these courses help people realize the purpose of life and the value of their own life experiences. Through storytelling instead of conventional presentations, leaders can learn how to tell a real-life story, about their pain, and transform that pain into hope for others. With storytelling, we can connect more deeply, thereby helping everyone. People can work together more effectively and towards a common goal.
For the past two years, Sandy has been providing public speaking skills training in both English and Vietnamese to leaders in the United States and Southeast Asia. In 2020, she and her colleagues officially launched the online training course and brought it to business leaders in Vietnam (such as Viettel Military Telecommunications Group, VinGroup) and other businesses. Sandy recalled the first day in an American middle school, she stood outside a lunchroom looking through a glass door while all the other students were eating and laughing. She was crying because she didn’t know how to ask for a lunch ticket in English. For the first week, she did nothing but put her head down on a desk and cried. No one seemed to notice. But then she remembered how her parents had risked their lives on a fishing boat. For three years in the camp, she longed for a day she could go to school again. She decided that she must learn English. With the help of teachers and friends, five years later, Sandy received a scholarship to go to Duke University, one of the top ten leading universities in the United States.
Because of her experience, Sandy knew that education is the key to improve one’s life and the lives of others. As a result, in 1998 she built a nonprofit organization to help thousands of Vietnamese refugees in the United States.
